Why California Enthusiasts Build With Us

California is the birthplace of hot rod culture — and its builders are some of the best in the world. So why do California clients come to a North Carolina shop? One word: value. California shop labor rates average $150 to $200 per hour. Our Charlotte, NC rates are $85 to $120 per hour — saving you 30 to 45 percent on an identical build. On a $120,000 project, that is $15,000 to $30,000 in savings, even after paying for cross-country enclosed shipping.

We have delivered builds to clients in Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco, Sacramento, San Jose, Fresno, and Bakersfield. Our California clients include SEMA exhibitors, Goodguys award winners, and weekend cruisers who simply want a reliable machine built right the first time.

❓ FAQ: California Hot Rod Builds

Why choose a North Carolina builder over a California shop?

California shop labor rates average $150 to $200 per hour. Our Charlotte NC rates are $85 to $120 per hour — saving you 30 to 45 percent on an identical quality build. On a $120,000 total project, that translates to $15,000 to $30,000 in real savings, even after paying $2,200 to $3,000 for cross-country enclosed shipping. Many of our California clients discovered us through word-of-mouth at Goodguys events and SEMA.

Will my LS-swapped hot rod pass California SMOG?

For pre-1976 vehicles (which includes most classic hot rods), California SMOG testing is not required — you are completely exempt. For 1976+ vehicles, we configure LS swaps with CARB-approved Executive Order components to pass both the visual and tailpipe portions of California SMOG testing. We always verify your vehicle's SMOG status before starting any California-bound build.

Do you build SEMA-quality show cars?

Yes. We have built multiple vehicles that have been displayed at SEMA in Las Vegas. Our show-quality builds include PPG basecoat/clearcoat with hand wet-sanded finish, custom fabricated interiors with bespoke upholstery, and competition-grade engine bays with tucked wiring and polished components. SEMA-level builds typically require 12 to 24 months and start at $150,000.
